With Gratitude for 12 Years: an Update About Human Connections

For 12 years, Human Connections has had the privilege of bringing together students, universities, community leaders, artisans, researchers, educators, and families across Mexico. Together, we have created experiences rooted in curiosity, cultural humility, mutual respect, and the belief that meaningful relationships have the power to change lives. Along the way, thousands of people crossed borders and entered local communities' homes and workshops, not simply to visit another country, but to understand another way of seeing the world.
We are profoundly proud of what we have built together. And perhaps even more proud of what the people we’ve had the privilege to host and partner with have gone on to accomplish on their own.
It is because of that history that today's news is so bittersweet.
During our most recent Board meeting, we made the difficult decision to conclude Human Connections' student programs and tour operations and begin a thoughtful transition toward permanently ending our operational activities.
As recently as this past year, there was every reason to believe the organization was entering a promising new stage. We were fortunate to have extraordinary community relationships, an incredibly dedicated team, and the support of a thoughtful and committed Board of Directors.
But as we looked toward the future, it became clear that continuing Human Connections would require beginning an entirely new organizational chapter — one that would demand substantial long-term investment, expanded in-country leadership, and a renewed multi-year commitment to growth. The unforeseen events in February, and their impact on future programming, further underscored those realities.
After careful reflection, the Board concluded that bringing operations to a close at this time is the most responsible path forward — one that allows us to preserve and honor everything Human Connections has accomplished and create space for others who believe in this same mission to continue building upon it.
Preserving the Human Connections legacy
Although our programs are coming to an end, we do not believe our mission ends here. One of our highest priorities during this transition is preserving the stories, relationships, lessons, and partnerships that have shaped Human Connections over the past twelve years.
Over the coming months, we will be creating a digital library to document these experiences so they may continue inspiring universities, educators, community leaders, students, and organizations committed to authentic cultural exchange. Because while organizations may have beginnings and endings, ideas have a remarkable way of continuing through the people whose lives they touch.

Durante 12 años, Human Connections ha tenido el privilegio de reunir a estudiantes, universidades, líderes comunitarios, artesanos, investigadores, educadores y familias de todo México. Juntos, hemos creado experiencias basadas en la curiosidad, la humildad cultural, el respeto mutuo y la convicción de que las relaciones significativas tienen el poder de transformar vidas. En el camino, miles de personas cruzaron fronteras y entraron a los hogares y talleres de comunidades locales, no simplemente para visitar otro país, sino para comprender otra forma de ver el mundo.
Estamos profundamente orgullosos de lo que hemos construido juntos. Y quizá aún más orgullosos de todo lo que las personas que hemos tenido el privilegio de recibir y con quienes hemos colaborado han logrado por sí mismas.
Es precisamente por esa historia que la noticia de hoy es tan agridulce.
Durante nuestra más reciente reunión de la Mesa Directiva, tomamos la difícil decisión de concluir los programas estudiantiles y las operaciones de tours de Human Connections e iniciar una transición cuidadosamente planeada hacia el cierre permanente de nuestras actividades.
En este último año habían muchas razones para creer que la organización estaba entrando en una prometedora nueva etapa. Tuvimos la fortuna de contar con relaciones extraordinarias con la comunidad, un equipo increíblemente comprometido y el respaldo de una Mesa Directiva comprometida.
Pero al mirar hacia el futuro, quedó claro que dar continuidad a Human Connections requeriría iniciar un capítulo completamente nuevo para la organización: uno que demandaría una inversión significativa a largo plazo, una red de liderazgo basada en México y un renovado compromiso de crecimiento durante varios años. Los acontecimientos imprevistos de febrero y su impacto en los programas que se avecinaban no hicieron más que confirmar esa realidad.
Después de una cuidadosa reflexión, la Mesa Directiva llegó a la conclusión de que que poner fin a las operaciones en este momento es el camino más responsable a seguir; uno que nos permite preservar y honrar todo lo que Human Connections ha logrado y abrir espacio para que otras personas que creen en esta misma misión puedan seguir construyendo sobre ese legado.
Preservando el legado de Human Connections
Aunque nuestros programas están llegando a su fin, nuestra misión no termina. Una de nuestras mayores prioridades durante esta transición es preservar las historias, las relaciones, los aprendizajes y las alianzas que han dado forma a Human Connections durante los últimos doce años.
En los próximos meses, estaremos creando una biblioteca digital para documentar estas experiencias, de modo que puedan seguir inspirando a universidades, educadores, líderes comunitarios, estudiantes y organizaciones comprometidas con intercambios interculturales. Porque, aunque las organizaciones tienen un comienzo y un final, las ideas tienen una extraordinaria capacidad de perdurar a través de las personas cuyas vidas han sido transformadas.
