One Last Thought, Reflections on Human Connections, Leadership and Letting Go

When I joined Human Connections in 2021, I never imagined that one day I would have the responsibility, the privilege, of leading its final chapter.

I must admit, I had to battle the voice that lives within all of us; the critic that kept whispering: you could have done more. 

The whispers lingered. But after many conversations with those closest to me and to the organization, and after a great deal of reflection, I arrived at a humbling realization: Human Connections was always a force greater than any one person. Like any living organism, it grew, evolved, and responded to circumstances beyond any individual's control. Sometimes, there comes a moment when reality quietly but unmistakably tells us that one chapter has reached its end.

Human Connections was built over twelve years by countless people who poured their hearts into it. My responsibility, and the responsibility I continue to carry, is to honor that legacy. In the end, that meant accepting the things I could not change while giving everything I could to the things I still could.

I see this moment as one of the greatest honors of my professional life.

Before anything else, I want to recognize the person without whom none of this would have existed.

Elly Rohrer founded Human Connections in 2014 with a simple but profound belief: that authentic human relationships across cultures have the power to change lives.

Anyone who has had the privilege of working with Elly knows she has a rare gift. She doesn't simply introduce people to Mexico — she invites them to fall in love with our people.

Her curiosity, discipline, eloquence, compassion, humor, and unwavering respect for local communities inspired thousands of students, partners, and colleagues over more than a decade. And it is because of that fortunate combination that she led this organization to its golden years.

She inspired me. Through Elly, I came to believe that social entrepreneurship is not just an ideal reserved for textbooks or conference stages — it is possible, sustainable, and transformative. Human Connections proved that. It happened in a small town on Mexico's Pacific coast because one person dared to believe that genuine human connection could change lives. It can happen everywhere.

One More Season

Looking back, I am incredibly proud of what our team accomplished during this final chapter. Together, we carried forward the values and lessons that Elly instilled in Human Connections and honored them in the best way we knew how: by creating one more season of meaningful experiences.

In what was always intended to be a transition year, we welcomed more than 250 travelers and directed over $11,000 to twelve community partners who opened their homes, workshops, and hearts to our participants. Those numbers tell only part of the story. Behind each one are conversations, friendships, shared meals, new perspectives, and memories that will continue rippling outward long after this organization has closed its doors.

None of that would have been possible without an extraordinary team. Aida Segnini, Anabel Anduaga, Alfredo Montes, Allie Olvera, Claudia Santos, Mauricio Domínguez-Desfassiaux, Kevin Donnelly, and Mariana García — thank you. And to all of our local partners who were part of this last year season: Adela y Alberto González, Andrés Carrillo, Café de Bucerías, Eduardo Urbiola, Fidencio Sánchez, Gillari García, Jardín Secreto, Leonarda Carrillo, Martha López, Nallely y Omar Zecua, Planeta Cacao, Rolando Bautista, Segis Becerra y Yadira Becerra. It has been an honor to walk this final chapter alongside you.

One last and forever: thank you

As I reached the end of this reflection, I realized that every name I wrote reminded me of another. The truth is, the list is endless. Former board members, staff, interns, university partners, host families, artisans, researchers, community leaders, volunteers, donors, and friends all helped shape Human Connections into something far greater than any one person could have built alone.

If you were part of this journey in any way, this thank you is for you.

Thank you for believing that our shared humanity is always stronger than our differences. I hope that belief continues to guide the lives, relationships, and communities it touches long after Human Connections becomes part of our history.

Una última reflexión: pensamientos sobre Human Connections, liderazgo y decir adiós

Cuando me comencé a trabajar con Human Connections en 2021, nunca imaginé que algún día sería mi responsabilidad, y privilegio, liderar su capítulo final. Debo admitir que tuve que enfrentar esa voz que vive dentro de todos nosotros: la crítica que no dejaba de decirme: deberías haber hecho más.

Esa voz de la crítica se quedó. Pero, después de muchas conversaciones con personas más cercanas a mí y a la organización, y tras una profunda reflexión, llegué a una conclusión que me llenó de humildad: Human Connections siempre fue una fuerza mucho más grande que cualquier persona. Como todo organismo vivo, creció, evolucionó y respondió a circunstancias que estaban más allá del control de cualquier individuo. A veces llega un momento en el que la realidad, de manera silenciosa, pero inconfundible, nos dice que un capítulo ha llegado a su fin.

Human Connections fue construido durante doce años por incontables personas que entregaron su corazón a este proyecto. Mi responsabilidad, y la responsabilidad que sigo asumiendo, es honrar ese legado. Al final, eso significó aceptar aquello que no podía cambiar, mientras daba todo lo que estaba en mis manos por aquello que aún sí podía.

Veo este momento como uno de los mayores honores de mi vida profesional.

Quienes han tenido el privilegio de trabajar con Elly saben que ella tiene un don poco común. No se limita a mostrarle México a los visitantes; los invita a también enamorarse de su gente.

Su curiosidad, disciplina, elocuencia, compasión, sentido del humor y profundo respeto por nuestras comunidades locales inspiraron a miles de estudiantes, socios y colegas durante más de una década. Y fue gracias a esa extraordinaria combinación que llevó a esta organización a sus años más gloriosos.

Ella me inspiró. Gracias a Elly, llegué a creer que el emprendimiento social no es solo un ideal reservado para los libros de texto o los escenarios de conferencias; es posible, sostenible y transformador. Human Connections lo demostró. Sucedió en una pequeña ciudad de la costa del Pacífico mexicano porque una persona se atrevió a creer que la conexión humana genuina podía cambiar vidas. Y puede suceder en cualquier lugar.

Una temporada más

Al mirar atrás, me siento increíblemente orgullosa de lo que nuestro equipo logró durante este capítulo final. Juntos, dimos continuidad a los valores y enseñanzas que Elly sembró en Human Connections y los honramos de la mejor manera que supimos hacerlo: creando una temporada más de experiencias significativas.

En lo que desde un principio estaba destinado a ser un año de transición, recibimos a más de 250 viajeros y destinamos más de $11,000 dólares a doce socios comunitarios que abrieron las puertas de sus hogares, talleres y corazones a nuestros visitantes. Estos números cuentan solo una parte de la historia. Detrás de cada una hay conversaciones, amistades, sobremesas, nuevas perspectivas y recuerdos que seguirán generando impacto mucho después de que esta organización haya concludio sus operaciones.

Nada de esto habría sido posible sin un equipo extraordinario. Al llegar al final de esta reflexión, me di cuenta de que cada nombre que escribía me hacía pensar en otro más. La verdad es que la lista es interminable. Exintegrantes del la mesa directiva, colaboradores, pasantes, universidades aliadas, familias anfitrionas, artesanos, investigadores, líderes comunitarios, voluntarios, donadores y amigos ayudaron a dar forma a Human Connections hasta convertirlo en algo mucho más grande de lo que una sola persona habría podido construir.

Si de alguna manera formaste parte de este camino, este agradecimiento es para ti.

Gracias por creer que nuestra humanidad compartida siempre es más fuerte que nuestras diferencias. Espero que esa convicción siga guiando las vidas, las relaciones y las comunidades que toca, mucho después de que Human Connections pase a formar parte de nuestra historia.
