Fidencio and Cristina, nahua artisans preserving traditional hammock weaving from Guerrero. Partners of Human Connections in Bucerías, México.

FIDENCIO & CRISTINA

HC PARTNERS SINCE: 2025

Fidencio and Cristina are originally from Copalillo, members of the Nahua community, one of the four Indigenous peoples of the state of Guerrero. They communicate in their native Nahuatl language; in fact, Fidencio’s nickname, Cuachirol, means “amigo” in Spanish.

From a young age, both learned the art of weaving hammocks using ixtle, a natural fiber derived from the agave plant. Over time, they began working with other types of textiles as well. They moved to Puerto Vallarta several years ago and later settled in Bucerías, where they have lived ever since.

They have four children (three sons and one daughter) all now adults, making Fidencio and Cristina proud grandparents. Fidencio works on the beach selling the hammocks sent by his family from Guerrero, as well as those he weaves outside their home.

PRODUCTS
Handcrafted hammocks in a variety of shapes, sizes, textiles, and colors. They also make small bags, swings, baby cradles, name bracelets, and eyeglass holders, all woven in their distinctive style. Also, Cristina creates embroidery napkins and tortilla warmers.
